The first job of any good practitioner is to find the cause of the pain based on exams, experience, and education. Is the pain from overuse, poor posture, a spinal fracture from an injury, arthritis, disc herniation, scoliosis, infection, kidney stone, hidden inflammation? X-rays, MRIs, blood tests and other diagnostic tools can help identify the cause of the pain. Surgeons may recommend surgery depending on the severity of symptoms. Most chiropractors offer a series of spinal adjustments as the treatment plan of choice.
With hundreds of hours of advanced training and practice in Chiropractic Neurology and Functional Nutrition, Dr. Austin uses less invasive (and less costly) hands-on diagnostic and treatment tools and methods.
Example: Balance Testing or Comprehensive Assessment of Postural Stability (CAPS) Testing is a highly specialized evaluation of complex core muscle, visual, vestibular (inner ear) and cerebellar function. Understanding which parts of the brain and spinal cord are not functioning optimally gives us a better understanding on how to treat pain and balance symptoms functionally. Pain and difficulties with balance are linked neurologically. Fixing the pathways that control balance and core stability will oftentimes fix the pain.
Spinal manipulation/adjustments are only one of the tools Dr. Austin uses. How he uses this tool is often different from traditional chiropractors. For instance, if Dr. Austin found that a patient needed more stimulation in the right hemisphere of the brain, he would adjust the spine on the left side of the body.
Relieving acute or chronic muscle, joint or bone discomfort through adjustments or manipulation is only one part of our patients’ Functional Wellness Plan. It may also include personalized therapeutic action steps such as:
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Austin has seen patients of all ages—from infants to 95 years young—enjoy long-term benefit from chiropractic neurology care and our functional wellness approach.
I came to Dr. Austin primarily for severe neck, back and arm pain. As I got to know more about his Functional Wellness approach, I knew there was a better way to deal with the pain I felt after eating, poor sleep, low energy and excess weight. I didn’t like going to regular doctors, paying for expensive tests that I wasn’t sure I needed, and how impersonal it felt at times. Dr. Austin and his staff really listen and care—I felt they saw me as a human being, not just another “patient.” The lab work was reasonable and they didn’t force it on me. Now, I can run upstairs, wear a belt that fit me 3 years ago, sleep better, have more energy, and just feel more positive in general. My neck is better too!
