Good Nutrition, With Lasting Success

At Austin Functional Wellness, we see functional nutrition as an essential foundation for both healing conditions and preventing illness. Frequently our patients have already tried to address their health concerns: digestive, weight, cholesterol, diabetes, low energy, and headaches using medications, surgery and expensive testing—without lasting success.

We define nutrition in the broadest possible way—not just WHAT we eat, but WHY, WHEN, WHERE, HOW and WHO.  Even when we think we have a pretty “healthy” diet, if we eat while stressed, angry, in front of a computer, very fast, etc., then we may not actual be digesting or absorbing these essential nutrients.

Analyzing Nutrition’s Role in Your Life

Using a multi-pronged diagnostic evaluation, we can assess how nutrition plays a role in your health, either as a CAUSE of or SOLUTION to your symptoms.  Your evaluation begins with completing a comprehensive New Patient intake.  Other assessment tools may include:

  • Functional Laboratory Tests:  We use these labs to assists in properly assessing conditions which may not be considered full-blown “disease” by conventional medical standards, but may point to malfunctions in the body’s systems.  Low energy, gut issues, excess weight and the like can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, “leaky gut”, chemical exposure, pre-diabetes, or genetic mutations  (i.e., methylation).
  • Brain Health & Nutrition Assessment:  This is a subjective questionnaire to assess symptoms related to nutritional and brain dysfunction.
  • Nourishment Logs:  Rather than just track what and how much you eat, we look for patterns in GI symptoms, energy level, emotions, when/where/speed of meals and snacks, bowel movements, water consumption, sleep and physical activity.

After this comprehensive evaluation, we will personalize a Functional Wellness Plan based on your report of findings, goals, lifestyle and investment. Ongoing support and coaching is available to help you implement the recommendations more easily.

A Testimonial From One of Our Patients

For quite some time, our daughter struggled with digestive issues which left her feeling ill almost daily. After a long journey of pediatric visits, blood draws, and specialist examinations, we felt helpless and hopeless. Then, we ended up in the hospital with our 5-year-old having a colonoscopy and getting a polyp removed. During one of my appointments with Dr. Austin, I shared my daughter’s experiences. Sharing with Dr. Austin led us to, long waited for, answers as to the cause of her condition. Through his care, we discovered my daughter had a food allergy to a common ingredient that is used in almost everything she was eating. Soy is her archenemy! With this knowledge, our daughter is not only soy-free, but free from the daily digestive afflictions.
